| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Ruth Hurlburt Hamilton on June 26, 2018 | ||||||
4 | at the age of 97; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton was born in Kirksville, Missouri in | ||||||
6 | 1921, but spent most of her life as a devoted Oak Parker; she | ||||||
7 | graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School and | ||||||
8 | decided to study acting; she attended the Goodman School of | ||||||
9 | Drama for a year, being cast as a thorn bush in Sleeping | ||||||
10 | Beauty; the director criticized her portrayal in rehearsal, | ||||||
11 | saying she was not "brambling" properly; she then attended | ||||||
12 | Pomona College and later graduated with a degree in English | ||||||
13 | Literature from Rosary College in River Forest; and

14 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton married Allen Beye Hamilton in 1943; | ||||||
15 | during her long and happy marriage, she wrote poems and | ||||||
16 | published several in the Ladies Home Journal; her poem, Song | ||||||
17 | for A Fifth Child, has been read and cherished through decades | ||||||
18 | by generations of mothers; and

19 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton had many vocations, including | ||||||
20 | acting in community theater productions, working with Oak Park | ||||||
21 | and River Forest High School productions, and writing profiles | ||||||
22 | of actors that appeared in the Chicago Daily News and many |

1 | other newspapers; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton was known for writing letters and | ||||||
3 | other pieces which carried her signature sparkle, wit, and | ||||||
4 | generosity; she wrote such a charming letter to the actress | ||||||
5 | Lynne Fontanne that Fontanne and husband, Alfred Lunt, agreed | ||||||
6 | to be interviewed, although they had long since stopped | ||||||
7 | agreeing to being profiled; and

8 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton spent the last ten years of her life | ||||||
9 | at the Presbyterian Home in Evanston; her enormous capacity for | ||||||
10 | happiness was a gift that touched everyone she met; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton was preceded in death by her loving | ||||||
12 | husband, Allen, and her daughter, Sarah; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Ruth Hamilton is remembered for her profound joy | ||||||
14 | and is survived by her children, Duncan, Bruce, Jeremy, and | ||||||
15 | Jane; her son-in-law, Bob Willard; and her grandchildren, Allen | ||||||
16 | and Duncan Riddell and Ben and Hannah Willard; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
19 | Ruth Hurlburt Hamilton, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
20 | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
21 | further
