SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Gladys Patsy Murray of Chicago, who
4passed away on May 24, 2018; and
5 WHEREAS, Gladys Murray was born in Shreveport County,
6Louisiana to Ed and Ida Birdsong on October 10, 1924; during
7her childhood, one of her greatest joys was playing with her
8nieces and nephews, who were close to her in age; she attended
9the Old Greenwood Baptist Church with her parents and siblings;
10education was very important to her, and she studied at the
11one-room schoolhouse within her parish; she married Johnnie
12Murray in Shreveport, Louisiana on May 13, 1939; after a short
13stay in Shreveport, she and her husband moved to Oakland,
14California; they moved to Chicago in 1947; the mother of ten
15children, she emphasized the importance of an education; and
16 WHEREAS, Gladys Murray was a member of Holy Temple Baptist
17Church, where her husband served as a deacon; later in life,
18she attended the churches of her children; she was known as a
19stylish dresser and the life of the party; she became a loving
20second mother to many of her children's friends, and she will
21be missed by all who knew her; and
22 WHEREAS, Gladys Murray is survived by her children, Jim,

1Marion, Ruby, Willie, Glynn, Phillip, Errol, and Desiree; her
2daughters-in-law, JoAnn, Denise, and Kim; her sons-in-law,
3Theophilus and Cedric; her 15 grandchildren; her 49
4great-grandchildren; and her five great-great-grandchildren;
5therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Gladys Patsy Murray and extend our sincere condolences to her
9family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
10further
11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Gladys Murray as an expression of
13our deepest sympathy.
