SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Lung cancer is caused when cells grow at an
3accelerated rate and do not die, as normal cells would do;
4instead, they continue to grow and form a group of abnormal
5cells called a tumor; and
6 WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both
7men and women; and
8 WHEREAS, Lung Cancer is often caused by smoking, but
9chances of developing this type of cancer increase with family
10history or with exposure to secondhand smoke, asbestos, radon
11gas, or high air pollution; and
12 WHEREAS, Each year, more people die from lung cancer than
13colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined; and
14 WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death
15and the second most diagnosed cancer in both men and women in
16the United States; and
17 WHEREAS, Today's smokers smoke fewer cigarettes than those
1850 years ago, however, they are at higher risk of developing
19lung cancer; and

1 WHEREAS, Lung cancer has the lowest 5-year survival rate of
2common cancers (breast, prostate, and colorectal) at 17%; and
3 WHEREAS, Although lung cancer has the highest death rate of
4any cancer, in 2015, it received a disproportionately low
5amount of federal research funding; in total, an estimated
6$1.012 billion was spent on breast cancer research, $350
7million on prostate cancer research, $315 million on colon
8cancer research, and only $265 million on lung cancer research;
9and
10 WHEREAS, The fight against lung cancer occurs on multiple
11levels, including education, outreach, and policy efforts; and
12 WHEREAS, Increased coordination among all stakeholders,
13including federal and state governments, providers, patient
14groups, community leaders and organizations, the public,
15business, and researchers, is critical to promote the
16prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer;
17therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the month
20of November 2016 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State of
21Illinois.
