| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Artha L. Chamberlain of Urbana, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on February 18, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain was born to Frank and Emma Kuoni | ||||||
6 | Littel on August 20, 1918; she was raised in the river town of | ||||||
7 | Sauk City, Wisconsin, where she learned to swim from regional | ||||||
8 | author August Derleth and spent afternoons with her older | ||||||
9 | sister, Dorothy, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lloyd Wright, enjoying | ||||||
10 | foreign films and cookies at Taliesin; she was a soda jerk in | ||||||
11 | the local drugstore, where she once served hamburgers to Cab | ||||||
12 | Calloway and his band; she received her Bachelor of Arts from | ||||||
13 | the University of Wisconsin-Madison and enlisted in the WAVES | ||||||
14 | shortly after World War II began; she was stationed in | ||||||
15 | Washington, D.C. and worked in Naval Intelligence until the end | ||||||
16 | of the war; she married Don Chamberlain in 1945 and they moved | ||||||
17 | to Urbana, where she received her Master of Arts from the | ||||||
18 | University of Illinois; and

19 | WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain spent most of her career in the | ||||||
20 | Department of Aero and Astro Engineering as the undergraduate | ||||||
21 | writing program director, publications counselor, and alumni | ||||||
22 | liaison; and

1 | WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain was an avid sports fan, | ||||||
2 | including golf, football, and basketball; she was a loyal | ||||||
3 | Illini fan, but her first loyalty was to her University of | ||||||
4 | Wisconsin Badgers, as evidenced by that red Wisconsin baseball | ||||||
5 | cap and Badger earmuffs she wore everywhere; she was active in | ||||||
6 | the community and at St. Patrick's Church; she was an Ebertfest | ||||||
7 | groupie from its inception and shared many Ebertfests with her | ||||||
8 | daughters and friends; she and her husband shared many | ||||||
9 | interests, including Krannert performances, Stardusters | ||||||
10 | dances, U of I football games, and traveling; she was a | ||||||
11 | talented and prolific writer and was probably best known for | ||||||
12 | her well-loved, annual Christmas letter; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain was preceded in death by her | ||||||
14 | husband of 52 years, Don, and her sisters, Dorothy Mueller and | ||||||
15 | Pauline Nickel; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain is survived by her children, | ||||||
17 | Frank Chamberlain, Ellen (Charlie) Warmbrunn, and Beth (Bill) | ||||||
18 | Welbes; her 3 grandchildren, Matt Call, Sam Call, and Jacob | ||||||
19 | Welbes; her nephews, John Nickel and David LeResche; her | ||||||
20 | nieces, Kathy Englander and Mary Nell Marten; and many | ||||||
21 | wonderful great-nieces and great-nephews; therefore, be it

22 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
23 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |

1 | Artha L. Chamberlain, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
2 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
3 | further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
5 | presented to the family of Artha Chamberlain as an expression | ||||||
6 | of our deepest sympathy.
