2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Gerald "Jerry" Peters of Petersburg, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on April 23, 2024; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters, the son of Martha and Lawrence | ||||||
6 | Peters, was born in Quincy on August 21, 1939; he graduated | ||||||
7 | from Quincy High School; he earned his bachelor's degree in | ||||||
8 | civil engineering from the University of Illinois | ||||||
9 | Urbana-Champaign, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta | ||||||
10 | Fraternity; he married Marylee Chval in Forest Park on | ||||||
11 | November 28, 1964; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters worked for the Springfield Sanitary | ||||||
13 | District for more than 33 years, retiring as executive | ||||||
14 | director; he then worked as a consultant at Hanson | ||||||
15 | Professional Services and Myers Land Service; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was very active in and passionate | ||||||
17 | about the Illinois environmental engineering community, | ||||||
18 | serving as vice president of the Illinois Association of | ||||||
19 | Wastewater Agencies, state representative for the Capital Area | ||||||
20 | of Engineers, president of the Central Illinois Water | ||||||
21 | Pollution Control Association, a member of the Illinois Water | ||||||
22 | Pollution Control Board, and a member of the Sangamon County |

1 | Subdivision Development Committee; he also served the Illinois | ||||||
2 | Waste Water Plant Operations Association as | ||||||
3 | secretary-treasurer and as chair of its Program Committee, and | ||||||
4 | he was the recipient of the Young Engineer of the Year Award | ||||||
5 | from the Illinois Society of Engineers; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was committed to his faith and was a | ||||||
7 | member of Little Flower Church in Springfield, where he served | ||||||
8 | as president of the Little Flower Parish Council and a member | ||||||
9 | of the Little Flower Men's Club; he was also a member of St. | ||||||
10 | Jude Catholic Church in Rochester and Holy Family Church in | ||||||
11 | Athens, where he was a choir member; he was also a board member | ||||||
12 | of Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Council #4179; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was devoted to assisting his | ||||||
14 | community, serving on the Regional Planning Committee for Camp | ||||||
15 | Widjiwagan - Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, as a judge in | ||||||
16 | speaking competitions for the 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts of | ||||||
17 | America, as a member of the Elks Club and the Capital City | ||||||
18 | Toastmasters Club, and as a volunteer at St. Martin De Porres | ||||||
19 | Food Bank, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, and the | ||||||
20 | New Salem State Historic Site; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters enjoyed golfing, traveling, studying | ||||||
22 | genealogy, antiquing, book and map collecting, and writing; he | ||||||
23 | was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Fighting Illini |

1 | football and basketball teams; he loved spending time with his | ||||||
2 | family, particularly at the lakehouse; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was known for his constant smile, | ||||||
4 | his infectious laugh, and the adoration he felt for his wife, | ||||||
5 | Marylee; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was preceded in death by his parents | ||||||
7 | and his sister, Marylou Breckenkamp; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Jerry Peters is survived by his wife of 59 years, | ||||||
9 | Marylee; his children, Mark (Anna) Peters, Connie (Marc) | ||||||
10 | Werts, and Chris (Joe) Adams; his siblings, Donald Peters, Jim | ||||||
11 | Peters, and Evelyn Smith; his grandchildren, Maggie, Emily, | ||||||
12 | Alexandra, John, Lincoln, Haylee, Joy, Corrine, and Jesse; and | ||||||
13 | numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
16 | Gerald "Jerry" Peters and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
17 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
