1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Forty years after Congress passed the | ||||||
3 | Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), promising every | ||||||
4 | worker the right to a safe job, the protections in OSHA have | ||||||
5 | saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented millions of | ||||||
6 | workplace injuries; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Nationally in 2007, despite current safety laws, | ||||||
8 | more than four million workers were injured and 5,488 workers | ||||||
9 | were killed due to job hazards; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, On April 28, 2010 organized labor will observe | ||||||
11 | Workers' Memorial Day all across the country to remember those | ||||||
12 | who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight | ||||||
13 | for safe workplaces for all workers; therefore, be it
| ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the Illinois Senate | ||||||
16 | recognizes that as long as there are workers seriously injured | ||||||
17 | or killed on the job, there will be a need to support stronger | ||||||
18 | safety and health laws in our State and country and will work | ||||||
19 | to that end; and be it further

20 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Senate will encourage the | ||||||
21 | Illinois congressional delegation and President Barack Obama |

1 | to continue to revise, revamp and strengthen our federal | ||||||
2 | workplace safety laws and to properly fund OSHA programs and | ||||||
3 | staff; and be it further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Senate offers its deep felt | ||||||
5 | sympathy and understanding to the families of workers who have | ||||||
6 | been seriously injured or killed on the job; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Senate officially declares | ||||||
8 | April 28, 2010 as Workers' Memorial Day in Illinois.
