1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Distracted driving occurs when motorists engage | ||||||
3 | in activities that divert their attention from driving safely; | ||||||
4 | these can include texting, talking on a cell phone, adjusting | ||||||
5 | the radio, and interacting with passengers; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Safe driving and public awareness of the dangers | ||||||
7 | associated with distracted driving will result in fewer traffic | ||||||
8 | crashes, fewer injuries, and fewer fatalities; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 2015, distracted driving was a factor in motor | ||||||
10 | vehicle crashes that killed 3,459 people, nationally; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Educating and informing the public about | ||||||
12 | distracted driving, enhancing public awareness of the dangers | ||||||
13 | associated with driving while distracted, ensuring younger | ||||||
14 | drivers understand the consequences of driving distracted, and | ||||||
15 | obeying established distracted driving traffic laws will | ||||||
16 | reduce the number of fatalities and injuries; and

17 | WHEREAS, The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police | ||||||
18 | (ILACP), partnering with the American Automobile Association | ||||||
19 | and supported by the Illinois Truck Enforcement Association, | ||||||
20 | the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of | ||||||
21 | Transportation, Safety Serve, local law enforcement agencies, |

1 | and the State's first responders are committed to educate | ||||||
2 | Illinois residents on all aspects of distracted driving, to | ||||||
3 | enforce applicable State laws and to support Illinois | ||||||
4 | Distracted Driving Awareness Week; and

5 | WHEREAS, The ILACP continues to develop partnerships | ||||||
6 | designed to create and enhance a strong, supportive traffic | ||||||
7 | safety culture throughout Illinois; therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare April 24 to | ||||||
10 | 28, 2017 as the inaugural, "Illinois Distracted Driving | ||||||
11 | Awareness Week"; and be it further

12 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, the | ||||||
14 | American Automobile Association, the Illinois Truck | ||||||
15 | Enforcement Association, the Illinois State Police, the | ||||||
16 | Illinois Department of Transportation, and Safety Serve.
