2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Augustine Martel of Silvis, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on February 6, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Augustine Martel was born in East Moline to | ||||||
6 | Augustine and Helen Martel on September 20, 1935; he was a high | ||||||
7 | school basketball star at Moline High School and received an | ||||||
8 | athletic scholarship which allowed him to earn his bachelor's | ||||||
9 | degree from the University of Iowa, where he studied art; he | ||||||
10 | was a member of Iowa's 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 Final Four | ||||||
11 | basketball teams; he served in the United States Army during | ||||||
12 | the Korean War and married Mary Boyles in Rock Island in 1956; | ||||||
13 | and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Augustine Martel worked for Deere and Company | ||||||
15 | until his retirement in 1997; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Augustine Martel was an avid reader of | ||||||
17 | biographies, history, and nonfiction books, and enjoyed | ||||||
18 | discussing them daily over coffee at home or out with friends; | ||||||
19 | he was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Augustine Martel was preceded in death by his | ||||||
21 | parents; and

2 | his children, Greg Martel, Ted (Margie) Martel, Steph (Dan) | ||||||
3 | Kopatich, and Stacie (Bob) Smith; his grandchildren, Frances | ||||||
4 | Martel, Alexander Martel, Katelyn Kopatich, and Allison | ||||||
5 | Kopatich; and his siblings, Dorothy Sotello, Frank (Bonnie) | ||||||
6 | Martel, Don (Nancy) Martel, Dick (Frances) Martel, Patty | ||||||
7 | (Harold) Hill, Larry Martel, and David Martel; therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
10 | Augustine Martel, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
11 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
