1 | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General | ||||||
3 | Assembly pays honor and respect to those who have served their | ||||||
4 | country and communities; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, United States Representative Lane Allen Evans was | ||||||
6 | born in Rock Island in 1951; he enlisted with the United States | ||||||
7 | Marine Corps during the Vietnam War at the age of 17; he was | ||||||
8 | stationed in Okinawa, Japan and was discharged in 1971; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Rep. Evans graduated from Augustana College in | ||||||
10 | Rock Island in 1974 and earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown | ||||||
11 | University in 1977; he started his legal career as an attorney | ||||||
12 | with the Quad Cities Legal Clinic in Moline; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Rep. Evans served in the United States House of | ||||||
14 | Representatives for 24 years, from January of 1983 through | ||||||
15 | January of 2007; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Rep. Evan's passion as a congressman was for | ||||||
17 | advocating on behalf of veterans and obtaining for them the | ||||||
18 | high-quality care and benefits that they deserved; he | ||||||
19 | sponsored and helped pass the Agent Orange Act of 1991; he was | ||||||
20 | awarded the Silver Helmet award from the American Veterans | ||||||
21 | Group (AMVETS) in 1995; and

1 | WHEREAS, Rep. Evans announced that he would not seek | ||||||
2 | reelection in November 2006 and retired at the end of the 109th | ||||||
3 | Congress; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Rep. Evans passed away on November 5, 2014; | ||||||
5 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF | ||||||
8 | REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate I-74 in | ||||||
9 | the Quad Cities from 4th Avenue to I-280 as the "Rep. Lane | ||||||
10 | Evans Memorial Highway"; and be it further
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
12 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
13 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
14 | giving notice of the name "Rep. Lane Evans Memorial Highway"; | ||||||
15 | and be it further
