1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, All-terrain vehicles are used by many Americans | ||||||
3 | for recreation and work-related activities; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Many national forests and recreational areas, | ||||||
5 | including Hiawatha National Forest, Huron-Manistee National | ||||||
6 | Forest, and Ottawa National Forest in Michigan, Land Between | ||||||
7 | the Lakes in Kentucky, Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, | ||||||
8 | Wayne National Forest in Ohio, and Allegheny National Forest in | ||||||
9 | Pennsylvania, allow the use of all-terrain vehicles on forest | ||||||
10 | trails; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Currently, the use of all-terrain vehicles in | ||||||
12 | Shawnee National Forest is only available through a disability | ||||||
13 | permit program; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Shawnee National Forest features numerous areas | ||||||
15 | for riding horses, including the Burden Fall Wilderness, the | ||||||
16 | Camp Cadiz Campground, One Horse Gap Lake, the Bald Knob Cross | ||||||
17 | Trail, the Johnson Creek Recreation Area, the Kinkaid Lake | ||||||
18 | Trail System, the Little Grand Canyon, and the Panther Den | ||||||
19 | Wilderness, but many members of the public have expressed their | ||||||
20 | wish to have greater opportunities for horse riding within | ||||||
21 | Shawnee National Forest; and

1 | WHEREAS, The creation of trails for the general use of | ||||||
2 | all-terrain vehicles in Shawnee National Forest and the | ||||||
3 | expansion of horse trails in the national forest would generate | ||||||
4 | large amounts of State revenue and prove to be a boon for | ||||||
5 | tourism for Shawnee National Forest, southern Illinois, and the | ||||||
6 | State at large; therefore, be it

7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
8 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
9 | urge the United States Forest Service to allow the use of | ||||||
10 | all-terrain vehicles in Shawnee National Forest, expand the | ||||||
11 | existing system of horse trails, and explore additional ways to | ||||||
12 | allow greater recreational use of Shawnee National Forest for | ||||||
13 | the recreational and economic benefit of the citizens of the | ||||||
14 | State of Illinois; and be it further

15 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
16 | delivered to Thomas L. Tidwell, Chief of the United States | ||||||
17 | Forest Service.
