HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of dedicated
public servant Alan J. Dixon, who passed away on July 6, 2014;
and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon was born on July 7, 1927 in
Belleville; he graduated from the University of Illinois in
Urbana in 1949 and Washington University School of Law in St.
Louis, Missouri in 1949; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served in the United States Navy Air
Corps during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon was admitted to the bar and began
practicing law in Belleville in 1949, the same year he was
first elected to public office; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served as a member of the Illinois
House of Representatives from 1951 to 1963 and as a member of
the Illinois Senate from 1963 to 1971; he served as Illinois
State Treasurer from 1971 to 1977, and as Illinois Secretary of
State from 1977 to 1981 before being elected to the United
States Senate in 1980; he was re-elected in 1986 and continued
to serve in this position until 1993; and

WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon dedicated his life to public service
and to the improvement of the State of Illinois and all of its
residents; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served the people of Illinois
faithfully for over 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served his State with honesty,
integrity, and commitment; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon was a dear friend to the members of
this body and to countless others in and out of public service
in this State; and
WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon is survived by his wife, Joan "Jody"
Dixon; 3 children, Stephanie (Doug) Yearian, Jeffrey (Stacy)
Dixon, and Elizabeth (Stuart) Megaw; 8 grandchildren; and 6
great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we mourn the passing of Alan J. Dixon and extend our sincere
condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
presented to the family of Alan J. Dixon, Governor Pat Quinn,
and Secretary of State Jesse White.
