2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of | ||||||
4 | Evangelist Sammie M. Turner; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner was born in Shaw, | ||||||
6 | Mississippi to Queen Victoria Sellas and Willie Apperton on | ||||||
7 | September 4, 1936; she was baptized at Parker Chapel A.M.E. | ||||||
8 | Church; she received her education at McEvans Elementary | ||||||
9 | School and attended high school in Shaw, Mississippi, where | ||||||
10 | she played on the basketball team; she married Walter C. | ||||||
11 | Turner Jr.; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner moved to Chicago in | ||||||
13 | 1958; she continued her education at Loop Junior College and | ||||||
14 | then enrolled at the Moody Bible Institute; she received her | ||||||
15 | bachelor's degree in religious education from the GMOR | ||||||
16 | Theological Institute of America in August 2003; and

17 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner retired from the City | ||||||
18 | of Chicago Park District, where she served as supervisor and | ||||||
19 | director of senior citizens at Seward Park; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner joined Stranger Home | ||||||
21 | M.B. Church when she moved to Chicago and later moved her |

1 | membership to Union M.B. Church in 1959; she served with the | ||||||
2 | missions visiting nursing homes, prisons, and those in need; | ||||||
3 | she served with the beautifying committee and wherever she was | ||||||
4 | needed until her husband became pastor at Greater Faith M.B. | ||||||
5 | Church in 1984; she continued to help wherever she could as | ||||||
6 | first lady of Greater Faith M.B. Church; after the retirement | ||||||
7 | of her husband as a pastor, they joined New Spiritual Light | ||||||
8 | M.B. Church, under the leadership of her son, Rev. Dr. Walter | ||||||
9 | P. Turner III; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner was active with the | ||||||
11 | national, district, and state conventions; she served as field | ||||||
12 | mission worker, a Bible teacher for the state and district, | ||||||
13 | and as president, secretary, and treasurer of the Baptist | ||||||
14 | Wives of Chicago Vicinity; she was a Bible teacher at the | ||||||
15 | Renaissance Nursing Home for over five years and ministered in | ||||||
16 | the Bahamas; and

17 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner enjoyed following | ||||||
18 | sports, especially tennis and the Chicago Bulls; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner was preceded in death | ||||||
20 | by her husband, Walter; her son, Clinton; her grandson, | ||||||
21 | Kenneth Jr.; her parents; her brother, Willie Jr.; and her | ||||||
22 | sister, Josephine; and

1 | WHEREAS, Evangelist Sammie M. Turner is survived by her | ||||||
2 | children, Mamie (Raybon), Pastor Walter (Lynne), Charnell, | ||||||
3 | Arnetta (Terry), and Kenneth; her cousin/son, Jerome | ||||||
4 | (Samella); 17 great-grandchildren and three | ||||||
5 | great-great-grandchildren; her nieces, Vickie and Linda; her | ||||||
6 | nephews, Wayne, Michael, Paul, Daryl, and Steven; her special | ||||||
7 | cousins, Jazie Bell (Willie) and Anna Belle Williams; her | ||||||
8 | God-daughters, Pamela Crawford, Ebony Woodard, and April | ||||||
9 | Woodard; her special God-daughter, Shannon Smith; her chosen | ||||||
10 | daughter, Cynthia Taylor; her spiritual daughter, Wylinda | ||||||
11 | Williams; her special cousins, Samella Hargro, Dr. Yvonne | ||||||
12 | Gillie-Wallace, and Barbara and Barry Thomas; her guardian | ||||||
13 | angels, Tamika Williams and Sylvia Witt; her One Hundred and | ||||||
14 | Eighth Place Crew, Diane, Steve, Jenny, Bonita, and Jerry; and | ||||||
15 | numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, | ||||||
16 | and more; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
18 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we mourn the passing of Evangelist Sammie M. Turner and extend | ||||||
20 | our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who | ||||||
21 | knew and loved her; and be it further
