HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Anne
4 Sullivan of Chicago, who passed away on November 2, 2009; and
5 WHEREAS, Anne Sullivan was born in 1910 in Chicago; she
6 grew up in Chicago's Austin neighborhood; she was a graduate of
7 Siena High School; and
8 WHEREAS, Anne Sullivan graduated from the DePaul
9 University College of Law and was licensed to practice law in
10 1934; after serving as a volunteer in probate court for a year,
11 she joined the law firm of DeFrees, Fiske, O'Brien & Thomson,
12 where she met fellow lawyer John Sullivan; the pair were
13 married in 1937; and
14 WHEREAS, In 1948, Anne Sullivan and her husband went into
15 practice together as Sullivan & Sullivan with offices in
16 downtown Chicago; despite the couple's growing family, she
17 continued to put in full days, coming home with her husband
18 each night around 6 P.M. to make dinner with help from their
19 children; she kept the practice after her husband's passing in
20 1973 and worked with her daughter, Debbie Roberts, during the
21 1990s; she and her husband were also the founders of Chicago's
22 first paralegal service, Law Clerk Inc.; and

1 WHEREAS, Anne Sullivan was an active member of the Women's
2 Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the West Suburban
3 Bar Association, and the DePaul Women's Board; and
4 WHEREAS, Anne Sullivan enjoyed traveling, fine dining,
5 theatre, DePaul basketball games, and Notre Dame football
6 games; and
7 WHEREAS, Anne Sullivan is survived by her sons, Jim, Bill,
8 Jake, and Larry; her daughters, Debbie Roberts, Mary Dewyer,
9 Nancy Fitzgerald, and Judy Hannigan; her 24 grandchildren; and
10 her 24 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13 mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Anne
14 Sullivan; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Anne Sullivan as an expression of
17 our sympathy.
