2 | WHEREAS, The American Psychological Association has warned | ||||||
3 | against the detrimental effects of violent video games on | ||||||
4 | adolescents; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Studies have showed a correlation between violent | ||||||
6 | video games and increased attention deficit problems, | ||||||
7 | violence, and addiction; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, 72% of American households play computer or video | ||||||
9 | games, as reported by the Entertainment Software Association; | ||||||
10 | and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, 91% of American children aged 2 to 17 play | ||||||
12 | computer or video games, as reported by the NPD Group; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Since 2009, there has been a 9% increase of | ||||||
14 | American children aged 2 to 17 that play video games, with an | ||||||
15 | approximate 65 million children currently playing video games, | ||||||
16 | as reported by the NPD Group; and

17 | WHEREAS, The American Psychological Association has | ||||||
18 | reported that, on average, boys spend 13 hours playing video | ||||||
19 | games a week and girls spend 5 hours playing video games a | ||||||
20 | week; and

1 | WHEREAS, The Entertainment Software Ratings Board rates | ||||||
2 | games bases on their age appropriateness; therefore, be it

3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
4 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
5 | we urge parents to carefully monitor their children's use of | ||||||
6 | all media and encourage that they assist in controlling the | ||||||
7 | video games that their children play.
