1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are | ||||||
3 | pleased to honor Bob Butler, mayor of Marion, on 50 years in | ||||||
4 | office; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Mayor Butler is southern Illinois' and the | ||||||
6 | nation's longest active-serving mayor; he will retire in 2 | ||||||
7 | years and at that time will be tied for the longest-serving | ||||||
8 | Illinois mayor at 52 years; in 1963, the citizens of Marion | ||||||
9 | elected him to be their mayor, probably not realizing he would | ||||||
10 | be their mayor into the 21st century; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Under Mayor Butler's tutelage, the city of Marion | ||||||
12 | has prospered; it has expanded geographically to almost twice | ||||||
13 | its size in 1963; the population has greatly increased and | ||||||
14 | Marion maintains its position as the economic and cultural | ||||||
15 | leader of southern Illinois; his signature accomplishment was | ||||||
16 | when he renamed Marion to be "The Hub of the Universe"; his | ||||||
17 | leadership qualities were never more tested then when a tornado | ||||||
18 | struck Marion in 1982 when he led the city out of that tragedy | ||||||
19 | to even greater heights; and

20 | WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as mayor, Bob Butler | ||||||
21 | served as a delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention | ||||||
22 | in 1970-1971 and aided in drafting the State's current |

1 | constitution; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Mayor Butler graduated from Marion Township High | ||||||
3 | School in 1944; he served in the U.S. Army and graduated from | ||||||
4 | the University of Illinois with a law degree in 1952; he | ||||||
5 | married Louetta Sanders in 1951 and they have one daughter, | ||||||
6 | Beth Ann; he served as Assistant State's Attorney for the | ||||||
7 | County of Williamson until becoming mayor in 1963; and

8 | WHEREAS, A monument and life-size bronze statue honoring | ||||||
9 | Mayor Butler will be dedicated at Tower Square in Marion on | ||||||
10 | April 16, 2013, during a ceremony marking his 50th year in | ||||||
11 | office; therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
13 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
14 | we honor Mayor Bob Butler for his service to the city of Marion | ||||||
15 | and wish him well in all his future endeavours; and be it | ||||||
16 | further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to Mayor Butler as an expression of our esteem and | ||||||
19 | respect.
