1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The First Presbyterian Church of Tolono | ||||||
3 | celebrated its 150th anniversary on June 28, 2008; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The Presbyterian Society was formed with 10 | ||||||
5 | members in 1857, meeting in a grain warehouse on East Main | ||||||
6 | Street in Tolono; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Services later moved to the bar room of the Marion | ||||||
8 | House, where the whiskey was covered up during the services; | ||||||
9 | and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, In the spring of 1858 the congregation built a | ||||||
11 | $3,000 wood structure; the current stone church was built in | ||||||
12 | 1893 for $5,000; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The church has an interesting history; at the | ||||||
14 | beginning of the church and its history, the congregation found | ||||||
15 | itself split over the slavery issue; and in April of 1915, | ||||||
16 | during a struggle to keep liquor out of the village, the | ||||||
17 | minister's house was bombed with dynamite; and

18 | WHEREAS, The church has had many pastors, including two | ||||||
19 | women; today the church membership stands around 85 members; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
2 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
3 | congratulate the pastor, staff, and congregation of the First | ||||||
4 | Presbyterian Church of Tolono on the sesquicentennial | ||||||
5 | anniversary of the church; and be it further

6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of | ||||||
8 | Tolono as a symbol of our respect.
