1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Many people enjoy learning about history, and the | ||||||
3 | recognition, or study, of the past allows students of all | ||||||
4 | ages, young and old, the opportunity to learn and grow; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, History offers many important insights into the | ||||||
6 | present and the possible future; by learning and understanding | ||||||
7 | the successes and failures of the past, the groundwork for a | ||||||
8 | brighter future ahead is laid; it is important to encourage | ||||||
9 | history education due to its instillment of civic duties and | ||||||
10 | qualities that good citizenship requires; and

11 | WHEREAS, Connections to the past help build empathic | ||||||
12 | connections to the present and the future, aid in the | ||||||
13 | acquisition of research, writing, and analytical skills that | ||||||
14 | are beneficial in any career field, and offer greater insight | ||||||
15 | into local, state, national, and global affairs; and

16 | WHEREAS, History comes in many forms, including diaries | ||||||
17 | and journals, audio and visual recordings, and pop culture, | ||||||
18 | which assist in ensuring the current generation's legacy is | ||||||
19 | passed down to future generations; it is important to honor | ||||||
20 | the legacies our ancestors left for us, for better or worse, as | ||||||
21 | we hope that our descendants will honor us; and

1 | WHEREAS, National History Day is a nonprofit education | ||||||
2 | organization improving the teaching and learning of history; | ||||||
3 | and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, National History Day reaches more than half a | ||||||
5 | million students and tens of thousands of teachers each year | ||||||
6 | through its international student history contest and its wide | ||||||
7 | range of professional development programs for teachers, | ||||||
8 | curriculum tools, and other educational activities; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, National History Day's core program is its | ||||||
10 | competition in which students in grades 6 through 12 choose a | ||||||
11 | historical topic that they then explore deeply by conducting | ||||||
12 | extensive research in libraries, archives, and museums before | ||||||
13 | presenting their conclusions and evidence through papers, | ||||||
14 | exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites, moving | ||||||
15 | through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by | ||||||
16 | professional historians and educators; and

17 | WHEREAS, The knowledge of history is the birthright of all | ||||||
18 | individuals from every walk of life, and the study of history | ||||||
19 | allows us to learn and grow from the past in order to advance | ||||||
20 | towards a brighter, happier, and more peaceful future where we | ||||||
21 | can live life to the fullest; therefore, be it
