Bill Title: Amends the Communicable Disease Prevention Act. Provides that the Department of Public Health shall develop an informational brochure relating to meningococcal disease that contains specified information. Provides that the Department shall make the brochure available on its website and shall notify every public institution of higher education in the State of the availability of the brochure. Provides that each public institution of higher education shall provide a copy of the brochure to all students and if the student is under 18 years of age, to the student's parent or guardian.

SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
410 ILCS 315/1.11 new

Amends the Communicable Disease Prevention Act. Provides that the Department of Public Health shall develop an informational brochure relating to meningococcal disease that contains specified information. Provides that the Department shall make the brochure available on its website and shall notify every public institution of higher education in the State of the availability of the brochure. Provides that each public institution of higher education shall provide a copy of the brochure to all students and if the student is under 18 years of age, to the student's parent or guardian.

1 AN ACT concerning health.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Communicable Disease Prevention Act is
5amended by adding Section 1.11 as follows:
6 (410 ILCS 315/1.11 new)
7 Sec. 1.11. Meningococcal disease brochure. The Department
8of Public Health shall develop an informational brochure
9relating to meningococcal disease that states that
10immunizations against meningococcal disease are available. The
11Department of Public Health shall make the brochure available
12on its website and shall notify every public institution of
13higher education in the State of the availability of the
14brochure. Each public institution of higher education shall
15provide a copy of the brochure to all students and if the
16student is under 18 years of age, to the student's parent or
17guardian. Such information in the brochure shall include:
18 (1) the risk factors for and symptoms of meningococcal
19 disease, how it may be diagnosed, and its possible
20 consequences if untreated;
21 (2) how meningococcal disease is transmitted;
22 (3) the latest scientific information on meningococcal
23 disease immunization and its effectiveness, including

1 information on all meningococcal vaccines receiving a
2 Category A or B recommendation from the Centers for Disease
3 Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on
4 Immunization Practices;
5 (4) a statement that any questions or concerns
6 regarding immunization against meningococcal disease may
7 be answered by contacting the individual's health care
8 provider; and
9 (5) a recommendation that the current student or
10 entering student receive meningococcal vaccines in
11 accordance with current guideline from the Centers for
12 Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on
13 Immunization Practices.
