Senate File 155 - Introduced SENATE FILE BY ALLEN A BILL FOR 1 An Act relating to the illumination of rear registration plates 2 on dump trucks and construction vehicles. 3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: TLSB 1986SS (1) 86 ns/nh PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 321.388, Code 2015, is amended to read 1 2 as follows: 1 3 321.388 Illuminating plates. 1 4 Either the rear lamp or a separate lamp shall be so 1 5 constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the 1 6 rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from a 1 7 distance of fifty feet to the rear. When the rear registration 1 8 plate is illuminated by an electric lamp other than the 1 9 required rear lamp, the two lamps shall be turned on or off 1 10 only by the same control switch at all times when headlamps are 1 11 lighted. This section does not apply to commercial vehicles 1 12 engaged exclusively in intrastate commerce that are dump trucks 1 13 or that are used exclusively for the movement of construction 1 14 materials and equipment to and from construction projects. 1 15 EXPLANATION 1 16 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 1 17 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly. 1 18 Current law requires the rear registration plate of a motor 1 19 vehicle to be illuminated by a lamp that renders the plate 1 20 clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. The 1 21 scheduled fine for violating this provision is $20. 1 22 This bill excludes from that requirement all commercial 1 23 vehicles engaged exclusively in intrastate commerce that are 1 24 dump trucks or that are used exclusively for the movement of 1 25 construction materials and equipment to and from construction 1 26 projects.
