SENATE RESOLUTION
Urging public and private schools in the state to develop and increase the number of activities that foster multi-cultural appreciation and understanding.
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Children and Youth Summit is an annual event that allows child and youth participants to assist this body in identifying issues that are important to Hawaii's children and youth; and
WHEREAS, a priority identified by participants of the 2015 Hawaii Children and Youth Summit was the issue of promoting multi-cultural understanding in Hawaii schools; and
WHEREAS, cultural misunderstandings can often lead to conflict between people; and
WHEREAS, exposure to and participation in activities of other cultures can generate and foster broader cultural understanding and appreciation; and
WHEREAS, schools for students from kindergarten to high school are well positioned to present opportunities for multi-cultural activities; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that public and private schools in the State, for students from kindergarten through high school, are urged to develop and increase the number of activities that foster appreciation and understanding of the many cultures in Hawaii in order to cultivate a community of greater awareness and understanding of people living around the world; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Education, and Executive Director of the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools.
