STATE OF HAWAII

 

 

 

 

 

SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the federal government to reimburse hawaii for DEBRIS REMOVAL, THE DREDGING OF TOXIC MATERIALS, AND OTHER environmental cleanup efforts in lahaina harbor.

 

 


     WHEREAS, in August 2023, Lahaina, on the island of Maui, experienced the fifth deadliest wildfire in United States history; and

 

WHEREAS, the wildfire deposited toxic materials, ash, and other contaminants into the waters of Lahaina Harbor; and

 

     WHEREAS, more than two thousand two hundred structures were damaged or destroyed in Lahaina and West Maui, eighty-six percent of which were residences; and

 

     WHEREAS, burned or melted building materials, furniture, plastics, and consumer electronics produce toxic substances that have seeped into Lahaina's groundwater, and seepage and runoff further threaten Lahaina's near shore waters; and

 

     WHEREAS, a sediment analysis has confirmed the presence of toxic chemicals and materials in Lahaina Harbor; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, that the federal government is urged to reimburse Hawaii for debris removal, the dredging of toxic materials, and other environmental cleanup efforts in Lahaina Harbor; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Mayor of the County of Maui.
