A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part II to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302A-    Service learning coordinator.  (a)  Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, each public school shall designate at least one person to serve as a service learning coordinator for that school.  The service learning coordinator shall be responsible for:

     (1)  Coordinating service learning projects for students at the school;

     (2)  Integrating service learning projects with the curriculum so that service learning projects enhance classroom learning;

     (3)  Pursuing potential service learning opportunities for students at the school; and

     (4)  Promoting civic engagement and greater collaborative interaction between students and the community.

     (b)  For the purposes of this section, "service learning" means a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
