HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

recognizing the 2014 junior achievement hawaii business hall of fame laureates: sherry menor-mcnamara, jake shimabukuro, and the kamitaki/mizoguchi family for their talents, corporate leadership, and success in business.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is proud to recognize those exceptional individuals who, through life-long entrepreneurial and civic activities, have contributed greatly to Hawaii's business community as well as the entire State; and

 

     WHEREAS, Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about free enterprise, work readiness, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs; during 2012 and 2013, Junior Achievement positively impacted over 4.4 million students across the United States; and

 

     WHEREAS, Junior Achievement's volunteer-delivered programs inspire students to dream big and reach their full potential; with the help of over 200,000 volunteers, participating students develop the skills necessary to experience the realities and opportunities of work and entrepreneurship in the 21st-century global marketplace; and

 

WHEREAS, since 1975, the U.S. Business Hall of Fame, presented by Junior Achievement, has honored men and women who have made outstanding contributions to free enterprise and to society; and

 

     WHEREAS, possessing strong leadership skills, these individuals have effectively applied managerial and leadership skills to community or public service or have shared economic success with the community through philanthropy; and

 

     WHEREAS, judged by a panel composed of representatives from Junior Achievement, The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the Business Roundtable, the Hawaii Council on Economic Education, and Smart Business Hawaii, these inspirational role models have successfully met the criteria for being selected as outstanding Hawaii business leaders; and

 

     WHEREAS, SHERRY MENOR-McNAMARA earned her induction into the 2014 Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame by becoming the youngest and first female President and CEO of The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, born in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, SHERRY MENOR-McNAMARA graduated from Waiakea High School before earning a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles; she then acquired her master's degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii's Shidler College of Business before pursuing graduate studies in public administration at the University of Southern California; she went on to receive her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Hawaii's William S. Richardson School of Law; and

 

WHEREAS, in addition to serving as the President and CEO of The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, SHERRY MENOR-McNAMARA is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Queen's Health Systems, the Board of Directors for the Filipino Community Center, the Board of Directors for the East-West Center Foundation, the Executive Committee of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, and the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for Move Oahu Forward; she also serves as Board Chair for the Hawaii Health Connector; and

 

WHEREAS, SHERRY MENOR-McNAMARA is the personification of excellence in corporate leadership, and her induction into the 2014 Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame is a true indicator of the depth of her knowledge of the corporate world and the breadth of her professional experience; and

     WHEREAS, recognized as an internationally renowned artist, JAKE SHIMABUKURO has taken his music career to a higher level after establishing his own management company, Toastman Inc., and a record company, Hitchhike Records over 12 years ago - both of which have prolonged his success; and

 

WHEREAS, throughout his career, JAKE SHIMABUKURO released nine albums and became an internet sensation by utilizing his ukulele as a powerful instrument; JAKE SHIMABUKURO has successfully integrated the aloha spirit into his music; and

 

WHEREAS, JAKE SHIMABUKURO is the epitome of success in both the business world and in the music industry; his phenomenal success and selfless contributions to charitable causes throughout the years have earned him a spot in the 2014 Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame; and

 

WHEREAS, entrepreneurial siblings Tadami Kamitaki and Matsuko Mizoguchi of Kahului, Maui, combined dreams and hard work to open the K. Kamitaki Store (which later became Kahului Dry Goods), which led to them opening the first Ben Franklin store on Maui in 1951, followed by the second Ben Franklin store in Hilo in 1961; and

 

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is proud to commend THE KAMITAKI/MIZOGUCHI FAMILY, as they have carried forth their business with the help of the next generation, and their accomplishments in opening 31 stores include six Ben Franklin Craft stores and 14 Ace Hardware stores in Hawaii, as well as an extended presence in Asia with 11 Ace Hardware stores; and

 

WHEREAS, the shared visions of these two families have inspired Hawaii's youth and have successfully played an economically vital role in Hawaii, earning them a spot in the 2014 Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame; and

 

     WHEREAS, these laureates have demonstrated excellence in their careers and a strong dedication to improving Hawaii's business community and the overall well-being of the State and will be officially inducted into the 2014 Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame on March 14, 2014; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that this body hereby congratulates Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame laureates SHERRY MENOR-MCNAMARA, JAKE SHIMABUKURO, and THE KAMITAKI/MIZOGUCHI FAMILY on the occasion of their induction into the 2014 Junior Achievement Hawaii Business Hall of Fame.
