HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Recognizing Legacy of Life Hawaii and honoring STEVEN "STEVE" MITSUO GINOZA, lOKELANI MARTHA YOSHIMI KRUSE, jONATHAN PONS AND HIS MOTHER, ELISA DANNALS, and their respective families who have selflessly given the gift of life DURING NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, with hectic schedules and the demands of everyday life, some of us often forget how blessed we are to have healthy, functioning bodies; for more than 120,000 people in the nation, they unfortunately do not have operating organs, and must await organ transplants to save their lives; and

 

     WHEREAS, organ donors can be considered as everyday heroes, selflessly giving a part of themselves to restore the lives of others, and as a result of these individuals' ultimate sacrifice, in 2013, 28,953 organ transplants were performed, giving hope and a second chance to the individuals who received these gifts of life; and

 

     WHEREAS, April is designated as National Donate Life Month in efforts to raise awareness about organ, eye, and tissue donation and transplantation; encourage Americans to register as donors; and celebrate those who have saved lives through the gift of donation; and

 

     WHEREAS, Legacy of Life Hawaii is a local non-profit organization working to save and enhance lives by recovering organs and tissue for transplant; and through community outreach and education, it promotes organ donation and provides donation counseling for families and medical staff, as well as honoring and supporting local organ donors and their families; and

 

WHEREAS, Steven “Steve” Mitsuo Ginoza became an organ donor at 28 years old after an untimely accident took his life; the youngest of four children, Steve was a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a civil engineer at the Honolulu Board of Water Supply; he loved life and having fun with his friends; he is remembered as the true hero of his family by his parents Frank and Jesse and his siblings Sandi, Susan, and Peter, as well as his extended ohana, including those who received his gift of organ donation; Steve’s gift of his heart, kidneys, and liver saved the lives of four people; and

 

WHEREAS, Lokelani Martha Yoshimi Kruse became an organ donor at sixteen years old after her life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident; Lokelani shone with brilliance, talent, and leadership from a very young age; she had a determined mind and heart, and at the time of her death, she had already taken a positive stance on organ and tissue donation, stating in a high school essay that she wanted to be an organ donor, a wish the Kruse family proudly continues to honor through their efforts to educate the people of Kauai on the importance of organ and tissue donation; and

 

WHEREAS, Jonathan Christopher Nainoa Pons became an organ donor after suffering a traumatic brain injury due to a motorcycle accident; Jonathan had big dreams and knew he had to set goals for himself in order to achieve those dreams; he left Hawaii to attend the United Technical Institute in Arizona where he accomplished his dream of becoming a certified automotive and diesel mechanic; he returned home to Hawaii and was surrounded by family and friends; as a "local boy," he loved the outdoors, and riding his motorcycle, surfing, and hiking brought him endless joy; although his life was cut short, as an eye and tissue donor, Jonathan gave the gift of sight to two others; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that this body extends its sincerest gratitude and appreciation to these individuals and their families for their gifts of life; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body recognizes April as National Donate Life Month to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.
