HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

12

THIRTIETH LEGISLATURE, 2020

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

requesting various appointing authorities to dedicate themselves to achieve gender parity on state boards and commissions and circuit court.

WHEREAS, August 2020 commemorates the one-hundredth anniversary of women getting the right to vote in the United States; and

WHEREAS, since that time, women have made great strides in and contributions to society; and

WHEREAS, despite this progress, women in Hawaii today are woefully underrepresented on Hawaii's major state boards and commissions and as judges, with sixty-three percent of those seats held by men; and

WHEREAS, women are more than qualified to fill these seats, as the Supreme, Appellate, and District Courts are close to equal percentages of men and women; and

WHEREAS, the need is for the various appointing authorities to consciously attempt to correct this imbalance and strive for parity in state governance and policy-making bodies; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that the various appointing authorities are requested to dedicate themselves to achieve gender parity on state departments, boards, commissions, and Circuit Court judges; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chief Justice, President of the Senate, and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
