HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE HAWAII STATE PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM TO EXTEND PUBLIC LIBRARY HOURS.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, an informed citizenry is the foundation of democracy; and

 

     WHEREAS, since Benjamin Franklin formed the first public library, these institutions, which are open to all people regardless of age, race, gender, social condition, or religion, have had a major role in providing public access to a wide spectrum of information; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Public Library System has a responsibility to provide the people of Hawaii with access to information and educational and recreational materials; and

 

     WHEREAS, public libraries are often the best places to study, conduct research, or complete school assignments; and

 

     WHEREAS, many potential patrons are unable to use public libraries during the day and early evening due to work commitments; and

 

     WHEREAS, many students who would like to use public libraries are also involved in sports, school bands, school clubs, and other after-school activities that end late at night; and

 

     WHEREAS, extended late-night hours would accommodate members of the public who are unable to use public libraries during their current hours; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii State Public Library System is requested to extend public library hours to accommodate patrons who are unable to use library services during the libraries' currently established hours; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the State Librarian, the Chairperson of the Board of Education, and the Superintendent of Education.
