HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the University of Hawaii to designate the Magoon research and teaching Facility site for the university of hawaii at manoa college of tropical agriculture and human resources.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa administration has identified the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility located at 2727 Woodlawn Drive as a possible site for faculty housing; and

 

     WHEREAS, there are other sites that can be used for the development or acquisition of faculty housing, and the University of Hawaii Executive Policy on University Housing Assistance Program, dated May 2011, presents additional ways in which recently appointed personnel can be helped to obtain suitable housing, including down payment and mortgage assistance; and

 

     WHEREAS, agricultural research, education, and outreach conducted by the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources are essential to advancing the State's agriculture and economy along with reducing the State's dependence on imported foods; and

 

     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources has conducted research, teaching, and extension programs at the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility for approximately forty years, and the displacement of the College from the site will cause significant and irrevocable damage to its programs; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility and its unique geographic location is needed for the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources' research on floriculture, bioremediation, biofuels, plant diseases, pests, viruses, fungi, aquaponics, fruits, vegetables, and other areas, and the research data and evaluations continuously collected at the site for forty years have been valuable and need to be continued; and 

 

     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources' research and extension services at the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility support Hawaii's agricultural businesses, which contribute millions of dollars to the State's economy; and

 

     WHEREAS, the close proximity of the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility to the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus makes it an indispensible field site for graduate and undergraduate students' research projects and enriches the learning experiences of students enrolled in College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources courses; and

 

     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources' educational outreach supports the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education of elementary, middle, and high school students and provides orientations and training to industry organizations, senior citizens, and community members; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, the Senate concurring, that the University of Hawaii is urged to reaffirm its Long Range Development Plan developed in February 1967, shortly after the Mauka Manoa lands were purchased with land-grant funds, and designate the portion known as the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility site for the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources due to its continuing importance to students, the community, and the State's economy; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, the President of the University of Hawaii System, the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and the Dean of the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.
