A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $520,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 to maintain existing alternative learning centers or alternative learning schools within the department of education.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $260,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 to establish an alternative learning center for the Nanakuli-Waianae school complex area.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $200,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for the planning and designing of alternative learning schools in each of the remaining school complex areas in the State that currently do not have an alternative learning school.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 4.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $150,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for one full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) director of alternative learning schools position within the department of education.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 5.  For the purposes of this Act, "alternative learning center" means a school that provides ongoing education to juveniles involved in the justice system or at high-risk of involvement in the justice system.

     SECTION 6.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2050.

Description:

Appropriates funds for existing alternative learning centers or alternative learning schools, a new alternative learning school within the Nanakuli-Waianae school complex area, the planning and designing of alternative learning schools in each of the remaining school complex areas across the State, and one full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) director of alternative schools position.  Effective 7/1/2050.  (SD2)
