A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
February 25, 2009, as Henry County Day at the state capitol; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
founded in 1821 and named after Patrick Henry, the 324 mile area of Henry County
is home to an estimated 180,000 Georgians, including major cities such as
McDonough, Stockbridge, Locust Grove, and Hampton; and
WHEREAS,
the county seat of Henry County is McDonough, a city named after Commodore
Thomas Macdonough; and
WHEREAS,
Henry County is home to McDonough's Brown House, which was built in 1826 as the
home for Andrew McBride, a Revolutionary War veteran from South Carolina, was
expanded in 1874 to serve as the Brown House Hotel, and currently houses the
Henry County Historical Society; and
WHEREAS,
McDonough is also the site of such historic gems as the 1897 Romanesque style
courthouse and the Shingleroof Methodist Campground, which was used as a
training ground for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War; and
WHEREAS,
Henry County attracts sports fans from around the state and country each year
with events like the Chick-Fil-A Charity Championship, a Ladies Professional
Golf Association Tour Event at Eagles Landing Country Club, and two major NASCAR
events at Atlanta Motor Speedway; and
WHEREAS,
located just east of Stockbridge, the 537-acre Panola Mountain State
Conservation Park surrounds a million year old monadnock; and
WHEREAS,
many festivals are held throughout the year in Henry County, including the Old
Stockbridge Days Festival, the Fairview Fall Festival, Old Locust Grove Days,
the Geranium Festival, and the Henry County Fair; and
WHEREAS,
a county that supports great economic growth for the state and has such rich
history and traditions is worthy of recognition by this body.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
the great achievements of Henry County and its citizens and recognize February
25, 2009, as Henry County Day at the state capitol.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to members of the public and
the press.
