A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. C.T. Vivian; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. C.T. Vivian is the founder of BASIC Diversity, Inc., a full-service diversity consultancy that has been operating nationally for 35 years, and the founder of C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute, Inc., an organization created to model leadership culture for the purpose of training and educating the new generation of grassroots leaders inspired to mobilize a constituency; and

WHEREAS, he is best known for his work with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and was the national director of affiliates and strategist for every Southern Christian Leadership Conference organization; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Vivian trained ministers and developed the urban curriculum for seminaries throughout the nation at the Urban Training Center in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, he served as part of the team of religious advisors to President Barack Obama during his successful 2008 campaign, has advised foreign heads of state, and has addressed the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, the New School for Social Research presented Dr. Vivian with an honorary doctorate, calling him "an apostle of social justice" in "the vanguard of the struggle for racial equality in America"; and

WHEREAS, an exceptional Georgian and civil rights leader, Dr. Vivian truly helped change the nation, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished man be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Dr. C.T. Vivian for his efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated contributions to the citizens of the State of Georgia and the nation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. C.T. Vivian.
