A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mrs. Josephine Burdette Brown; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Josephine Burdette Brown was born in Newton County, Georgia, a beloved daughter of John and Ruth Burge Burdette; and

WHEREAS, she graduated from Albany State University with numerous citations and certificates; and

WHEREAS, she has been cited by the University of Georgia, Gainesville Junior College, and Kennesaw State University for her outstanding contributions; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown became the first African American Senior Center director in Newton County and was the director for Heard Start before working in the aging field; and

WHEREAS, she is a charter member of the Newton County African American Council for the Arts and an active member of the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, she has received numerous meritorious citations in partnership, including the Senior Center participation in the United States Census in 2010, Certificate of Local Government Management by the University of Georgia in 2003, the Leadership of Newton County Award by the Newton County Chambers of Commerce, and the Newton County Certificate of Appreciation; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown has received numerous honors, including the MLK Dream Alive Award in 1991, the Outstanding Community Service in Volunteerism Award and the I Have a Dream Award in 1993, the Faithful and Consecrated Services Award in 1995, and the Outstanding Service Award in 2000; and

WHEREAS, she has been honored for service to the Council on Aging with a Certificate of Continuing Education in Gerontology in 1983, the Outstanding Accomplishments Award in 2000, the Outstanding Operational Facility Award in 2004, the 2001 Event of the Year in 2002, and the Senior Adult Section in 2003; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Mrs. Brown is an active member of the Graves Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she serves on seven different boards within the church and was honored with the Outstanding Service Award in 1998; and

WHEREAS, she was united in love and marriage to the late Staff Sergeant Dave William Brown, a Vietnam veteran, and together they were blessed with two remarkable children and four wonderful grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown continues to be a mentor to her extended family and community, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Mrs. Josephine Burdette Brown for effective, efficient, unselfish, and dedicated public service and contributions to her family and her community and for helping to make Newton County a better place in which to live in for all citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Josephine Burdette Brown.
