RESOLUTION
Honoring
and celebrating the 90th birthday of Mr. Norman F. Lumpkin, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Norman F. Lumpkin spent his childhood in the "Butter Milk Bottom Community"
of Atlanta, Georgia, until he was 13; and
WHEREAS,
having lost his mother at the age of 10, Mr. Lumpkin went to work as a bicycle
delivery boy for Lane Drug Company when he was 13 in order to support himself
and earn money to rent out a room in the neighborhood; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Lumpkin soon became a cook's helper at Lane Drug Company and after working
there for two years, he was promoted to head chef; and
WHEREAS,
in 1940 Mr. Lumpkin began his long career with Western Electric Company, serving
as the cafeteria's chef and later the company's janitor when the cafeteria was
closed down; and
WHEREAS,
upon his retirement from Western Electric Company in 1961, this dedicated and
hardworking man was serving as the company's chief plant maintenance engineer;
and
WHEREAS,
as a baseball player, Mr. Lumpkin earned the nickname "Geronimo" during his time
in the Negro American League with the Atlanta Black Crackers for his impressive
abilities as a leadoff batter and base runner; and
WHEREAS,
this 60 year resident of the Dixie Hills Community in Atlanta enjoys wood
carving, taxidermy, listening to jazz, and studying world history and animals;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1938, Mr. Lumpkin was united in love and marriage to Annie Lee Watkins, and
the couple spent 63 amazing years together, being blessed with three loving and
devoted children; and
WHEREAS,
this distinguished Georgian has given inspiration to many through his impressive
work ethic and commitment, and he possesses the vast wisdom which only comes
through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through
overcoming the many challenges of life; and it is only fitting and proper that
he be appropriately recognized during this very special and remarkable time in
his life.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that Mr. Norman F. Lumpkin, Sr., is
hereby congratulated on the wonderful occasion of his 90th birthday and
commended for his many decades of caring devotion to his family and fellow
citizens.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Norman F. Lumpkin, Sr.
