purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Dixie Speedway was designed and built by the Southeast dirt track legend Bud
Lunsford in 1969; and
WHEREAS,
this three-eighths mile, oval clay track in Woodstock, Georgia, is one of about
900 dirt tracks in the United States and one of about a dozen such tracks in
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the Dixie Speedway has showcased the talents of the region's up-and-coming and
world famous drivers, including Bill Elliott, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt,
Davey Allison, and Jeff Gordon; and
WHEREAS,
this well-known Georgia speedway was used in the filming of
Six
Pack, starring Kenny Rogers;
and
WHEREAS,
the Dixie Speedway is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, and its
policies, such as no alcohol sales, demonstrate the speedway's commitment to
keeping racing focused on family fun and first-class entertainment;
and
WHEREAS,
the Dixie Speedway is a major contributor to the local sports economy, drawing
visitors from across the Southeast for top-quality stock car racing;
and
WHEREAS,
racing at the Dixie features the roar of 800-horsepower engines, the aroma of
exhaust fumes and corn dogs, and the sheer exhilaration at the drop of the green
flag; and
WHEREAS,
it is fitting and proper that the many contributions of the Dixie Speedway to
our economy and to our state be recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express their pride and honor in having the Dixie Speedway in our
state and as a part of this state's racing history and, in honor of the
speedway's 40th anniversary race, recognize May 23, 2009, as Dixie Speedway
Day.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Dixie
