RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the 142nd anniversary of Morehouse College; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Morehouse College was founded in 1867 in Atlanta, Georgia, with the mission to
develop men with disciplined minds to lead lives of leadership and service;
and
WHEREAS,
originally named the Augusta Institute and located in Augusta, Georgia,
Morehouse College currently enrolls approximately 2,800 students from more than
40 states and 12 foreign countries; and
WHEREAS,
a private, historically black liberal arts college for men, Morehouse has
conferred bachelor's degrees on more black men than any other college or
university in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
the college's academic programs emphasize students' intellectual and character
development as well as teaching the history and culture of black people,
offering bachelor of arts and science degrees in 26 majors; and
WHEREAS,
Morehouse provides its graduates with the strength, knowledge, and experience to
carry the torch of excellence by developing and enhancing skills in oral and
written communication, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and
interpersonal relationships; and
WHEREAS,
by fostering an understanding and appreciation of world cultures as well as
their own, Morehouse provides students with the confidence and training to
confront any adversity, master their fears, and achieve success;
and
WHEREAS,
Morehouse College has been cultivating the minds of future leaders and prominent
citizens for 142 years and the dedication of the school's faculty, staff,
students, and founders are worthy of recognition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Morehouse College for their dedication and commitment to
providing quality higher education and extend congratulations on the 142nd
anniversary of the school's creation.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Morehouse
College President Dr. Robert Michael Franklin.
