A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
February 12, 2011, as Georgia Day and commending Oglethorpe Chapter National
Society Daughters of the American Revolution; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Oglethorpe Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)
promotes a greater appreciation for the founding of Georgia in 1733 as the last
of the 13 original American colonies and recognizes that the psychological
turning point of the American Revolution was the victorious Battle of Kettle
Creek, February 14, 1779, which was fought on the land of James Hammett, in
Wilkes County, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Oglethorpe Chapter NSDAR of Columbus, Georgia, is the fifth oldest active DAR
Chapter in the State of Georgia and bears the name of James Edward Oglethorpe,
who on February 12, 1733, brought 116 settlers to Yamacraw Bluff, for the
purpose of settling the Colony of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Oglethorpe traveled across Indian-occupied land to Coweta, the Muscogee (Creek)
Native American capital located at the Chattahoochee River, below the present
City of Columbus, Georgia, and there, on August 21, 1739, he obtained
permission, by virtue of a second treaty with the Native Americans, to allow the
permanent Colony of Georgia to be settled; and
WHEREAS,
in 1900, the late Mrs. Alfred O. Blackmar II, a charter member of Oglethorpe
Chapter NSDAR, traveled to England and obtained a replica of the signet that was
created for The Trustees' Seal of Georgia Colony and bestowed the same to
Oglethorpe Chapter NSDAR and for her direct descendants, Ms. Nancy Edge and
daughter, Miss Savannah Thompson; and
WHEREAS,
Oglethorpe Chapter NSDAR has brought the replica of The Trustees' Seal of
Georgia Colony to display for the Georgia House of Representatives and for all
to consider what this seal has stood for these 278 years, during which time
Oglethorpe Chapter NSDAR has continued to educate and inform Georgia citizens
about Georgia history; and
WHEREAS,
Governor Alexander Stephens (1737-1750) wrote in his journal that Georgia Day
was always marked on February 12 by the firing of guns, the hoisting of the
flag, and the drinking of toasts, and the Georgia Legislature gave legal
recognition to this celebration in 1909 and recommended that the public schools
of Georgia hold special ceremonies each year; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia State Society NSDAR is presently making a leading effort to educate and
inform Georgia citizens about state history.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body declare that Georgia Day be celebrated across Georgia during the month
of February, particularly on February 12, 2011, by flying the Georgia flag,
showing the motto "In God We Trust" in schools and on government buildings all
across the state, and readings of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Georgia
flag.
