A RESOLUTION


Celebrating the life of Mama Omo Oba Bernice Olusola Onabanjo Nee Otubushin; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mama Omo Oba Bernice Olusola Onabanjo was born on May 5, 1923, in Ijebu- Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, the daughter of Samuel Jason Otuneye Otubusin and Theodosia Adewale Otubusin (Nee Oshikanlu) from Gbalegbuwa Ruling House, at Iyanro, Ijebu-Ode, Olowu Ruling House at Owu Ijebu and Erunwon Ruling House in Ijebu; and

WHEREAS, she was educated at Saint Saviours' School; Anglican Girls High School; Ijebu-Ode and United Missionary College, Ibada, and in 1941 where she obtained her Higher Elementary Certificate known as Grade II; and London University, Institute of Education and obtained a Teachers' Professional Certificate; and

WHEREAS, she was appointed the Principal of Moslem Girls School, Ijebu-Ode in 1956. On her return from United Kingdom, she taught at Anglican Girls Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode and later came to Lagos to continue her teaching career. She finally took up appointment with Lagos City Council, Inspectorate Division and retired from the service in October, 1975. After retirement, she took up a contract appointment with Lagos City Council in 1976 and finally retired from the teaching field in 1984 after returning from Jerusalem Pilgrimage; and

WHEREAS, she married Mr. Godwin Olajide Onabanjo on April 1, 1948, and the marriage was to last 60 years and was blessed with many wonderful children: Late Rev. Olive Titilola Idowu, Dr.Toks Onabanjo, Prof. (Dr) Babs Onabanjo, Mrs. Gbemisola Olagunju, Arch. Gbenga Onabanjo, Mrs. Bunmi Bamgboye, and Mrs. Funmilola Ojo-Osagie; and

WHEREAS, Omo Oba Bernice Onabanjo was very sociable and religious, was a member of Saint Judes Anglican Church, Etube-Metta, served as secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary Society in 1965, and later became the Treasurer in 1968, from which she voluntarily retired in 1980. She was the President of the Society from 1993 to 1995 and was the matron of the following societies: Ladies Auxiliary Society, Gospel Army, Young Women Christian Association, Christian Women Auxiliary Association of Nigeria, and Christ Own Gird. She was a member of the Women's Guild, Women's Bible Class, Mothers' Union, Emmanuel Society, Jerusalem Pilgrims Society, Elders' Union, Harvest Committee, and Men's and Women's League of Cathedral Church of Our Saviour Ijebu-Ode and was the Special Guest of Hosannah Youth Band Regular during their yearly anniversary.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the life of Mama Omo Oba Bernice Olusola Onabanjo is recalled and celebrated as a worthy example for all persons to regard and follow.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mama Omo Oba Bernice Olusola Onabanjo.
