A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mr. John Henry Chamlee; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mr. John Henry Chamlee was born on December 10, 1923, in Cherokee County, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Department of the Army for 38 years at the Atlanta Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base, Homestead Air Force Base in Florida, Utica in New York, Hogar Generating Plant in Philadelphia, and Fort McPherson, from which he retired; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the Army, he was recruited by Senator Terrell Starr and hired by Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller to serve as Senate Doorkeeper for the 1988 Session, then accepted a position as bailiff with the Superior Court of Clayton County; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, Senator Starr and Representative Bill Lee convinced him to return as Doorkeeper for the House of Representatives where he served for 17 years until his retirement in 2011; and

WHEREAS, the position of Doorkeeper is distinguished, these hard working and dedicated employees have been enormous assets to the citizens of Georgia, and all the members of the General Assembly greatly appreciate the invaluable service of Doorkeepers; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Chamlee, affectionately known as "Pappa John," as well as every Doorkeeper who has previously served the Georgia General Assembly, were known for keeping order; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Chamlee worked with many other Doorkeepers who are worthy of recognition, including Mr. Charlie Peek, Mr. James Parrish, Mr. Tommy Taylor, and Mr. John Sowell; and
WHEREAS, he is united in love and marriage to Adele, and together they are blessed with three remarkable children, Robert, Sandra, and Susan, four wonderful grandchildren, and ten adored great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Chamlee is a Baptist deacon, Sunday school teacher, sanctuary choir member, Little League coach, Boy Scout leader, volunteer fireman, and a member of the Forest Park Kiwanis Club for 25 years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Chamlee served with honor and distinction with the House of Representatives and his vision and unyielding commitment have been sorely missed since his retirement to become the primary caregiver to his loving wife; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr. John Henry Chamlee and every Doorkeeper that has ever worked for the House of Representatives for their efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. John Henry Chamlee.
