A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Honorable Thurbert Baker, Attorney General for the State of
Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on June 1, 1997, Thurbert E. Baker was appointed Georgia's fifty-second Attorney
General, and in November of 1998, 2002, and 2006, he was elected and reelected
by the voters of Georgia to serve our state as Attorney General; and
WHEREAS,
the honorable Thurbert Baker is a man known for his integrity and honesty, and
he has a reputation for putting the best interests of the people of Georgia
above his own personal or political concerns; and
WHEREAS,
Thurbert Baker won the first of five elections to the Georgia House of
Representatives in 1993, and he served as the Governor's floor leader,
spearheading some of the most significant legislation in modern Georgia history,
including the HOPE scholarship program and the "Two Strikes and You're Out" law
that sent repeat violent offenders to prison; and
WHEREAS,
Attorney General Baker is the first African American to serve as Georgia's
Attorney General; and
WHEREAS,
as Attorney General, he has focused on fighting criminal corruption and consumer
fraud, drafting and pushing for groundbreaking statutes to prosecute mortgage
fraud, identity fraud, and increase penalties for child pornographers;
and
WHEREAS,
Attorney General Baker created the Open Government Mediation Program within his
office, which has helped numerous Georgians to resolve their request for open
access to government meetings and records without having to go to court;
and
WHEREAS,
he is admired by his constituents and colleagues alike as demonstrated by his
election to serve as the President of the National Association of Attorneys
General for the 2006-2007 term; and
WHEREAS,
this independent thinker and great political leader is a person of magnanimous
strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence,
fairness, and kindness, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the
outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be
appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the Honorable Thurbert Baker for his outstanding leadership
and commend him on a job well done in service to the citizens of this
state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable
Thurbert Baker.
