RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Otis Spillers; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Mr. Otis Spillers on April 14, 2009; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Spillers was born on February 12, 1919, in Roberta, Georgia, and was the
beloved son of J.D. Spillers and Verna Hartley Spillers; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Spillers lived and worked on a farm until he completed high school, and he
later graduated from Georgia Alabama Business College and Draughins Business
School; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty in the United
States Navy, valiantly and bravely defending democracy during World War II;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Spillers started the Spillers Lumber Company in Covington, Georgia, in 1947,
and throughout his career he was involved in lumber manufacturing, real estate,
construction, home building supplies, insurance, marine supplies, mini and
industrial storage, and rental property; and
WHEREAS,
an active leader in his community, Mr. Spillers served in the Georgia House of
Representatives, the Covington City Council, and was chairman of the Newton
County Water and Sewerage Authority during its formative years; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Spillers was a member of the Covington Rotary Club for 63 years, where he
was a past president and chaired numerous committees, including the Empty
Stocking Fund; and
WHEREAS,
his leadership and guidance were instrumental during his time as chairman of the
Covington Planning Commission, president of the Covington-Newton County Chamber
of Commerce, commander of the local American Legion, Exalted Ruler of Covington
Elks Lodge #1806, and member of the Board of Counselors for Oxford College;
and
WHEREAS,
he was united in love and marriage to the late Mary Delbridge Spillers, and he
was blessed with two remarkable children, Amelia and A.J., and many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
a hard working, happy, and generous man, Mr. Spillers will long be remembered
for his love of family and golf, and this loyal father, grandfather, and friend
will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Otis Spillers and express
their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. Otis Spillers.
