Florida Senate - 2024 (NP) SR 630 By Senator Simon 3-00976-24 2024630__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the important milestone of 3 the Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial and 4 envisioning the powerful next chapter of the 5 community. 6 7 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial presents 8 the capital of the third-most populous state in the country an 9 opportunity to reflect and celebrate 200 years of remarkable 10 achievements by citizens with drive, determination, and 11 ambition, and 12 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee, Leon County, and the 13 surrounding region have a rich human history dating back 15,000 14 years, with present-day Tallahassee being the site of the 15 Indigenous Apalachee capital of Anhaica, and 16 WHEREAS, Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, according 17 to terms of the Adams-Onis Treaty between the United States of 18 America and Spain, and 19 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee was chosen to be the seat 20 of government and Florida’s capital for this newly formed 21 territory on March 4, 1824, because of its scenic beauty and 22 enchanting cascade, for the agricultural quality of its rich 23 soils, and because of its strategic geographic position halfway 24 between the historic ports of St. Augustine and Pensacola, and 25 WHEREAS, the boundaries of Leon County were drawn to 26 encompass the newly designated capital, and the county was 27 established by the Territorial Legislature that same year on 28 December 29, 1824, and 29 WHEREAS, Florida would later be admitted as the twenty 30 seventh state in the United States in 1845, with the City of 31 Tallahassee as its capital, and 32 WHEREAS, during the past 200 years, the Tallahassee-Leon 33 County community has produced world-renowned authors, artists, 34 and leaders in arts, education, politics, mathematics, science, 35 civil rights, and sports, and 36 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee and Leon County are home 37 to three world-class higher education institutions, Florida 38 State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical 39 University, and Tallahassee Community College, which 40 collectively serve approximately 70,000 students each year, and 41 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee-Leon County community is renowned 42 for its beautiful parks, tree-lined roads, and over 700 miles of 43 hiking, biking, running, paddling, and riding trails that 44 encourage healthy, active lifestyles, and 45 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial 46 Commemoration is an opportunity to recognize the impact and 47 contributions of the rich history, natural beauty, ambition, and 48 diversity that the City of Tallahassee and Leon County have had 49 and continue to have on this state, the nation, and the world, 50 and 51 WHEREAS, there is a diverse array of more than 100 exciting 52 programs and activities planned during the bicentennial year to 53 appeal to both visitors and residents, NOW, THEREFORE, 54 55 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 56 57 That the Florida Senate recognizes and extends greetings 58 and best wishes to all observing the important milestone of the 59 Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial and envisions the powerful 60 next chapter of the community. 61 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 62 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Mayor of 63 Tallahassee as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida 64 Senate.
