HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 14
RECOGNIZING MARCH 10TH AS “HARRIET TUBMAN DAY”.
WHEREAS, Harriet Ross Tubman was an American heroine and patriot who tirelessly worked to attain freedom for those enslaved and to stop the inhuman practice of slavery; and
WHEREAS, Harriet Ross Tubman was born into slavery in 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland and escaped to freedom in Canada before settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, she was introduced to the Underground Railroad and became a conductor herself within one year after her escape; and
WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman’s trek included Delaware, since it was the last slave state on the Underground Railroad’s northern path, and
WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman helped lead hundreds of her people to freedom and was proud to claim she “never ran her train off the track and never lost a passenger”; and
WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman passed on March 10, 1913, her last words to friends and family being “I go to prepare a place for you”; and
WHEREAS, her last words further emphasize the life of strength, selflessness, and service she led in order help others experience the beauty of freedom; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, March 10 was nationally declared as “Harriet Tubman Day” to commemorate the rich, impactful legacy of Harriet Tubman.
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152 nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the General Assembly hereby designate March 10, 2023, as “Harriet Tubman Day” to recognize her lifetime achievements and historical legacy.
