AN ACT

 

establishing The joint study committee on elementary mathematics retention policies.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.  Joint study committee on elementary mathematics retention policies; membership; duties; report; delayed repeal

A.  The joint study committee on elementary mathematics retention policies is established consisting of the following members:

1.  One member of the senate who is appointed by the president of the senate and who serves as cochairperson of the committee.

2.  One member of the house of representatives who is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives and who serves as cochairperson of the committee.

3.  Two members of the state board of education, one of whom is appointed by the president of the senate and one of whom is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

4.  Two public schoolteachers, one of whom is appointed by the president of the senate and one of whom is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

5.  Two school district governing board members, one of whom is appointed by the president of the senate and one of whom is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

6.  Two school administrators, one of whom is appointed by the president of the senate and one of whom is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

7.  Two members from the business community who are appointed by the governor.

8.  Two members from the higher education community who are appointed by the governor.

9.  Two members of the public who are appointed by the governor.

B.  The committee shall study and develop policies to retain pupils in elementary school who are not proficient in mathematics.

C.  On or before December 1, 2018, the committee shall submit a report regarding its findings and recommendations to the governor, the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives and shall provide a copy of this report to the secretary of state.

D.  This section is repealed from and after December 31, 2018.
