WHEREAS, Tonya Mallory, the cofounder, president, and chief executive officer of Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc., was honored by Ernst & Young with its 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Emerging Company category on November 17, 2012; and

WHEREAS, the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the nation's most prestigious business award, recognizes visionary leaders who demonstrate innovation, financial success, and personal commitment as they create and build world-class businesses; and

WHEREAS, Tonya Mallory, who began her career as a lab technician, spent 20 years in clinical diagnostics and disease management before deciding in 2008 to make her idea of identifying and treating high-risk patients before a serious health crisis and expensive emergency room visit becomes a reality; and

WHEREAS, committed to the power and importance of her vision, Tonya Mallory cashed in her 401K and her children's college savings plans and raised additional funds to launch Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc., (HDL), headquartered in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, HDL has changed the way clinical laboratories interact with physicians and patients; it provides a comprehensive panel of tests related to risk factors for cardiovascular and related diseases that helps physicians develop a personal treatment plan for patients, including a risk overview and health coaching; and

WHEREAS, Tonya Mallory has overseen HDL's explosive growth from three founders in 2009 and 11 employees in 2010 to more than 600 today by focusing on the use of information technology and encouraging employees to think entrepreneurially; and

WHEREAS, HDL is currently building two new six-story towers, a $68.5 million expansion that will add 240,000 square feet and 653 new jobs; and

WHEREAS, an inspiring role model driven by the belief that early detection and treatment can save lives and money, Tonya Mallory saw a need, invested in herself and her vision, and created a world-class company that is transforming health care; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Tonya Mallory hereby be commended on her selection as the Ernst & Young 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year in the Emerging Company category; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tonya Mallory as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's congratulations and admiration for her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to preventative health care.
