SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 184
Celebrating the life of David R. Rathburn. 

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 8, 2024

 

WHEREAS, David R. Rathburn, a highly respected Virginia businessman, community leader, and philanthropist, passed away on February 6, 2024; and

WHEREAS, David Rathburn was born in Denver, Colorado, on July 7, 1957, and graduated from Grove City College in 1979 with degrees in accounting, business administration, and political science; and 

WHEREAS, David Rathburn began his professional career at Price Waterhouse before joining Hopeman Brothers Marine Division of AWH Corporation as assistant to the president; and

WHEREAS, at the age of 33, David Rathburn was named president of Hopeman Brothers and led it for 22 years before forming marine interior outfitter US Joiner LLC in Crozet; and 

WHEREAS, David Rathburn was guided through life by his strong Christian faith that led him to serve as a Ruling Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville and a leader of Junior Achievement of Augusta County, the Waynesboro and East Augusta United Way, and the Virginia Institute of Autism; and

WHEREAS, David Rathburn was elected to the Grove City College Board of Trustees in 1992 and in 2003 became the youngest person to serve as the Board's chairman; and 

WHEREAS, David Rathburn served as interim president of Grove City College, making many important operational decisions in 2003; and

WHEREAS, during David Rathburn's 28 years as a trustee, Grove City College provided quality Christian higher education to thousands of students, extricated itself from the federal student loan program, and raised half a dozen new buildings, including Rathburn Hall; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of David R. Rathburn, a respected Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to the family of David R. Rathburn and to Grove City College as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
