SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 65
Celebrating the life of Rosa Ileana Johnson.

WHEREAS, Rosa Ileana Johnson of Hampton, who was chair of the Department of Early Childhood Education at Hampton University, a woman of great faith, and a devoted wife and mother, died on December 14, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Ileana Johnson, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, entered Hampton Institute, now known as Hampton University, in 1944; she earned a bachelor's degree in 1948, later continuing her education by receiving a master's degree from Hampton University, and undertaking further study at Boston University and New York University; and

WHEREAS, preparing students to teach young children was Ileana Johnson's life's work; she was a distinguished teacher and administrator at Hampton University for 33 years, concentrating on early childhood education until she retired in 1985; and

WHEREAS, an active member of a sorority, Ileana Johnson made many friends through her involvement with the Lambda Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and she was a dedicated member of the Hampton Roads philanthropic service organization for many years; and

WHEREAS, Ileana Johnson was a woman of deep faith; she was a lifelong Presbyterian, and enjoyed fellowship and worship as a member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in Newport News; and

WHEREAS, when she was a college student, Ileana Johnson met the love of her life, Eugene W. Johnson, Sr.; they were married for 67 years and raised a family in the Hampton Roads area; and

WHEREAS, Ileana Johnson will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her husband, Eugene, Sr.; children, Deadre and Eugene, Jr., and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Rosa Ileana Johnson of Hampton, chair of the Department of Early Childhood Education at Hampton University, a woman of great faith, and a devoted wife and mother; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rosa Ileana Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
