Designating December, in 2024 and in each succeeding year, as Chest Wall Deformity Awareness Month in Virginia.

WHEREAS, chest wall deformities, or abnormally shaped chests, are a common condition that affect about one in 500 people; and

WHEREAS, the two most common types of chest wall deformities are pectus excavatum, also known as funnel chest or concave chest, which occurs when the breastbone pushes inward, and pectus carinatum, also known as pigeon chest or raised chest, which is a condition where the breastbone and ribs protrude; and

WHEREAS, chest wall deformities often first become noticeable early in a child's life when the child is one or two years of age; the deformity may be mild at first and become more severe during puberty, when a child's bones and cartilage are growing rapidly; and

WHEREAS, the Nuss procedure, invented in 1987 by Dr. Donald Nuss at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, is a minimally invasive procedure for treating pectus excavatum that has improved the lives of patients across the world; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to recognize the efforts of organizations and families working to ensure a better life for those affected by chest wall deformities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate December, in 2024 and in each succeeding year, as Chest Wall Deformity Awareness Month in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Nuss Center at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk so that members of the organization may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this month on the General Assembly's website.
