SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 345
Celebrating the life of Carol Lee McGuire-Bishop.

WHEREAS, Carol Lee McGuire-Bishop, a sports enthusiast, animal advocate, and vibrant citizen of Clifton Forge, died on November 19, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Carol McGuire-Bishop was raised in Clifton Forge and, after graduating from Radford College, returned home to become a loyal educator at two schools in Alleghany County, Sharon Elementary School and Clifton Middle School, for 31 years; and

WHEREAS, as the former president of the Alleghany Education Association and later as a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, she worked to strengthen educational institutions in the county; and

WHEREAS, Carol McGuire-Bishop supported the community as the chair of the local Democratic Party and the secretary of the Mountaineer Athletic Club of Alleghany County; and

WHEREAS, sports was one of Carol McGuire-Bishop's great passions and her support for the Alleghany Mountaineer football team, the Virginia Tech Hokie football team, and the New York Yankees baseball team was beyond question; and

WHEREAS, the spirited clang of Carol McGuire-Bishop's cowbell and the cheers rolling from her "moose horn" were the recognized sounds adding to the ambiance of every Alleghany Mountaineer football game; and

WHEREAS, as a season ticket holder for Virginia Tech football, she was a familiar sight to the coaching staff and never missed an opportunity to offer friendly advice, based on her keen understanding of the game; and

WHEREAS, her love of sports, particularly at Virginia Tech, was rivaled by her love for Ford Mustangs, one of which she painted maroon with burnt orange stripes in honor of the Virginia Tech colors; and

WHEREAS, Carol McGuire-Bishop exhibited a love for animals that few could match and, in addition to sitting on the board of the local Humane Society, she tended to any stray cat or dog her neighbors brought to her attention, frequently powering her Mustang across state lines to find "no-kill" shelters for them; and

WHEREAS, Carol McGuire-Bishop inspired generations of students, improved the quality of life of countless stray animals in Clifton Forge, and joyfully motivated her chosen sports teams; and

WHEREAS, Carol McGuire-Bishop is survived by her loving husband Norris, her stepson Eric, and many other friends and family who will miss and fondly remember her; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a devoted educator and a lively presence in Clifton Forge, Carol Lee McGuire-Bishop; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carol Lee McGuire-Bishop as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
