WHEREAS, James Wesley Dix, Sr., a United States Army veteran, gourmet cook, and passionate music lover from Newport News who brought great joy to his friends and family members, died on July 9, 2012; and WHEREAS, a graduate of Onancock High School, James "Jimmy" Dix grew up in a large and loving family, the fifth of 10 children born to Mable L. and Edward L. Dix, Sr.; and WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Jimmy Dix enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for 17 years before returning to Virginia and settling in Newport News; and WHEREAS, a talented chef, Jimmy Dix took great delight in being in the kitchen, carefully preparing delicious and nutritious meals for members of the Hampton University community and its visitors, including President Barack Obama; and WHEREAS, in his free time, Jimmy Dix, an enthusiastic music fan also fondly known as DJ Zoom, entertained family and friends with his thoughtful selections of the perfect music for an array of special events; and WHEREAS, the patriarch of a large family that includes seven children, seven stepchildren, and 11 grandchildren, Jimmy Dix spent countless enjoyable hours in the company of his family members, playing basketball with his sons and nephews and sharing his keen sense of humor; and WHEREAS, baptized at a young age, Jimmy Dix had a deep faith and kind heart that endeared him to those he met throughout his life; and WHEREAS, Jimmy Dix will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife, Marilyn; children, James, Jr., Lakisha, Tyvesha, Lashay, Jasmine, Tiffany, and Jeremiah, and their families; stepchildren, Shawntia, Monchelle, Thadtigus, Jolyn, Derrick, Gelisa, and Williemae, and their families; his coworkers; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of Newport News, James Wesley Dix, Sr.; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Wesley Dix, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
