SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 104
Celebrating the life of Samuel Wallace Cundiff.

WHEREAS, Samuel Wallace Cundiff of Vinton, a respected citizen, local pharmacist, and community leader, died on August 3, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Cundiff was born in Huddleston on June 20, 1928, the son of William Benjamin Cundiff and Daisy Lemon Thompson Cundiff; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Cundiff graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy in 1953, now part of Virginia Commonwealth University, and served his country in the United States Army Medical Field Service Corps from 1953 to 1955 and the National Guard 29th Division from 1946 to 1956; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Cundiff began his pharmacy career as a partner in White Front Pharmacy before opening his own business, Cundiff Drug Store in 1959, which quickly became a popular gathering place; and

WHEREAS, devoted to the health and welfare of his neighbors, Wallace Cundiff remained active as the pharmacist at Cundiff Drug Store until November 2008; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his profession, Wallace Cundiff was appointed to the Virginia Board of Pharmacy in 1988, serving for nine years, and served as board chairman from 1991 to 1992; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Wallace Cundiff gave his time and expertise as a member of the Roanoke County School Board, as president of the Vinton Dogwood Festival and Vinton Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the Advisory Board of the Vinton First Aid Crew, Vinton Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee, and Vinton Association of Merchants and Professionals; and

WHEREAS, a valuable and beloved community leader, Wallace Cundiff was honored with the Vinton Most Outstanding Citizen Award in 1968 and the Vinton Father of the Year award in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Cundiff was a member and former president of the Vinton Host Lions Club and a member and founding president of the Vinton Breakfast Lions Club; he was named Most Valuable Lion in 1985, received the Melvin Jones Scholar Award in 1993, and was honored with the naming of the Lion S. Wallace Cundiff Scholarship Fund in 2009 in recognition of his many years of outstanding community service; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Cundiff was a faithful member of the Vinton Baptist Church, a member of the Pete Sink Sunday School Class, and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Cundiff will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Mae Vawter Cundiff; his children, Debbie Cundiff Davis, William "Bill" Cundiff, Samuel W. "Sam" Cundiff, Jr., and Marianne Nester and their wonderful families especially his grandchildren; and his numerous family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Samuel Wallace Cundiff; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Samuel Wallace Cundiff as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
