HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 83
Commending Solenberger's True Value Hardware.

WHEREAS, for the past 135 years, Solenberger's True Value Hardware in Winchester has met the home and garden needs of the Northern Shenandoah Valley region, while exemplifying a spirit of entrepreneurialism and goodwill that is central to the community's character; and

WHEREAS, Solenberger's True Value Hardware was founded in 1888 by John "JNO" S. Solenberger and his cousin Daniel Stouffer as a store for farm implements and wagons; JNO Solenberger later bought out Daniel Stouffer's share of the business in 1905 and Solenberger and Stouffer became JNO S. Solenberger & Co., Inc.; and

WHEREAS, following a catastrophic fire in 1908, JNO S. Solenberger & Co. moved to a location on Loudoun Street in Winchester, where it would operate for the next 85 years until moving to its current location on Berryville Avenue in 1993; and

WHEREAS, following the death of JNO Solenberger in 1935, JNO S. Solenberger & Co. was owned and operated by his three sons, Howard, Hugh, and Herbert, for several years; the ownership of the store has since passed to Hugh Solenberger's son John T. Solenberger, Sr., and subsequently to John T. Solenberger's children, John T. Solenberger, Jr., and Cyndi Solenberger; and

WHEREAS, from its origins as a farm implement and wagon store to the general hardware and sporting goods store that it is today, Solenberger's True Value Hardware has stayed in business over the years by adopting to the needs and interests of its customers; and

WHEREAS, Solenberger's True Value Hardware was built on the values of trust and integrity and since its founding has maintained an unwavering commitment to being a force for good in the lives of both its customers and employees; and

WHEREAS, today, Solenberger's True Value Hardware offers everything one could want for their home and garden, while its employees, some of whom are either fifth generation Solenberger or have been with the company upwards of a half-century, have the training and expertise necessary to answer any building or repair question a customer may have; and

WHEREAS, Solenberger's True Value Hardware generously gives back to the community through annual fundraising events benefiting the Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter and the Winchester Rescue Mission; and

WHEREAS, in addition to various commemorative events, Solenberger's True Value Hardware has unveiled an in-store museum exhibiting artifacts from the company's past to provide members of the community with the opportunity to reflect upon the store's history and its legacy of service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Solenberger's True Value Hardware of Winchester hereby be commended on the occasion of its 135th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Solenberger's True Value Hardware as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and best wishes for the store's continued success.
